Helen Marie Newsome
The Prince George’s County Police Department arrested a suspect for the attempted murder of a child in Landover.  The suspect is identified as 26-year-old Helen Marie Newsome of the 7200 block of East Inwood Street in Landover.

On August 31, 2013, at about 8:00 am, patrol officers were called to the 6700 block of Munsey Street in Landover.  Once on scene, they learned that Newsome had broken into the home and walked into a bedroom where a young boy was sleeping.  Newsome grabbed a pillow and place it over the child’s face and then began striking him in the head with a weapon.  Despite his injuries, the victim was able to escape and run outside to a neighbor’s home for help.  The child received treatment at the hospital for head injuries and has been released.

The preliminary investigation reveals the suspect had previously been in a romantic relationship with the victim’s father.  Police officers arrested Newsome at her home later that morning.  She has admitted her involvement in the assault.  Newsome is charged with first degree attempted murder.  She is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a $500,000 bond.
