Sugar Ray Leonard Returns to Palmer Park to Partner with PGPD

Posted on 5:31 PM by Unknown

World champion boxer Sugar Ray Leonard returned to his hometown of Palmer Park Thursday to partner with the Prince George’s County Police Department and the NAACP in a new community service initiative.  Its goal is to fight bullying, help improve fitness through First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign and promote literacy.

“Words can’t describe the feeling and emotion I have for being back at home,” said Mr. Leonard as he spoke at Prince George’s County Police Headquarters.

Prince George’s County Police Chief Mark Magaw welcomed Mr. Leonard. “We are only as good as the partnerships we form with our community,” said Chief Magaw.

The initiative will also expand the services of the Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing Center on Barlowe Road in Palmer Park to include a Sugar Ray Leonard Center of Excellence. The project is called SRLX.  It will offer a long list of benefits to local families and children to include tutoring, life skills training and a place to learn about healthy choices and exercise.

Bob Ross, President of the PGC chapter of the NAACP joined Mr. Leonard and Chief Magaw at PGPD Headquarters.
