The Prince George’s County Police Department hosted a joint active shooter training drill at High Point High School in Beltsville on Friday, July 19, 2013. The exercise included more than 150 PGPD personnel, the Prince George’s County Fire Department, Maryland State Police and several other local law enforcement agencies.
The goal of this massive, realistic, coordinated scenario is to instill confidence in PGPD patrol officers who will likely be the first to arrive on scene if ever needed in a real active shooter situation. The patrol officers who took part in today’s drill and related training receive invaluable experience that will better prepare them to stop a threat. These type of scenarios also allow participating agencies to streamline a response.
“We are surprised at just how well this drill played out,” said Major Mark Person, Commander of the PGPD’s Training and Education Division. “The patrol officers, specialty units and every agency involved in this drill all performed at the top of their game. We hope our community feels confident that if this drill was instead a reality, we are well prepared.”
PGPD recruits played the role of students at the school. It took responding patrol officers 17 minutes to find and neutralize the four role-playing gunmen who stormed the building.
